Spun is happy to be in a position to help support the community that our family, friends, and customers call home. Since opening in 2015, we have worked with a number of partners to help knitters and crocheters ply their crafts to improve people’s lives. Here are a few ongoing locally based programs that you can access through Spun:
Mittens for Cold Hands
Ypsilanti’s Andrea Brush created the Mittens for Cold Hands project in 2016 to encourage local crafters to create 100 percent wool hats for the men of the Detroit Rescue Mission. Spun donated yarn, and our customers gave their time and skill, and just before Christmas Eve 2016, we handed off over 100 pairs of mittens to Andrea, who delivered them to the shelter. In 2017, Andrea expanded the program to include mittens, scarves, and hats for children, women, and men. Our generous customers came through yet again, and Andrea picked up bags full of knitted goods from Spun before the end of the year. Our work with Andrea's organization is ongoing, so please keep bringing in warm handmade woolies to donate!
Knit Michigan was founded by Joan Sheridan to provide comfort items to cancer patients, collecting handknits from volunteers and distributing them around the state, trying to meet the ongoing need for chemo caps, blankets, pillows, and Knitted Knockers (TM). Spun serves as a collection point for Knit Michigan: bring your goods to us, and we will help them reach their destination.
Please note that Knit Michigan also honors individual requests. Simply send a note to firstname.lastname@example.org, including a note about the patient and their treatment center, and volunteers will work to get you the items you need. Or let Carol know (email@example.com), and she'll manage the logistics for you.
The Robert J. Delonis Center
Ann Arbor’s main shelter, located on Huron just west of First Avenue, is regularly in need of donated items, especially women’s hygiene products and undergarments (new in the package). Drop any donations at Spun, and we will get them into the right hands.
Flash Donation Days
In November 2016, we initiated Spun Flash Donation Days, on which we donate 10 percent of our gross sales to a nonprofit. Since then, we have occasionally extended the reach of these events in a couple new directions (weekend-long windows! higher percentages! sponsorships!). We have been happy to support the following organizations:

|• ACLU of Michigan||• Jim Toy Center||• Safehouse Center Ann Arbor|
